I have read the archives on 50 hour service, but my dealer made a comment yesterday that I need help with. He mentioned that he does not change the transmission/hydrolic oil, just the filter "unless there is metal" in the screen. Is this something I should accept, or should I demand a full fluid change? This is for a bx2230, used mostly for mowing and some box blade work. It has been 9 months since I purchased this little fellow so I am not a heavy user.

Thanks, Harley

Yes the manual calls for a full fluid change -- that is why I was surprised when the shop manager indicated that he did not tend to change fluids other than the engine oil. I will demand the change -- this little fellow is a one time purchase and I hope to have it for a long long time. Any other input please let me know.

Harley ....

I would not take shortcuts. Change the fluids too.... and insist on Super UDT. It does make a difference. ....

Thats not the first time I heard that. Many dealers practice the if no metal no need to replace it rule. The real reason the manual calls for full replacement is to remove any metal that accumulates over the break in period, which of course does get caught by the screen, anything finer gets caught up in the filters. It is an acceptable practice in most maintenance shops. Another thing is, by the time any real wear occurs from lack of the first change, the tractor will be well out of warranty. For peace of mind, have it changed. I do my own maintenance, so I just do it by the book. ....

Super UDT maintains its viscosity through a wider temperature range than regular UDT which is critical in hydrostats. ....

I found an interesting thing when I did my 200hr service. I discovered that when the dealer did the 50hr, they did not remove and check/clean the screen. The bolt, cover, clamps and hose to the screen had never been touched. But they did change the fluid and filter. ....

ScooterMagee, a coment about screens and the "rest of the story". I stayed at the dealer shop and watched the full (with super UDT)50 hour service take place. They did fine except for the screen in the transmission and low and behold they never knew a screen existed. I showed them the manual, the location of the screen, and had them remove it and clean it out. Given this I am not surprised that you found that your screen was not cleaned at the 50 hour service. I get the impression this shop is pretty lax, and I do think it is a good idea to watch them perform their work. They probably think I am an old fuddy duddy but with shop language, but thats ok! ....

After servicing the screen on my JD2210 myself, I can see way a dealer would avoid it. It was a real P.I.T.A. to get to. There were no discernable shavings or shards, just a little gunky grit on the magnet and a little grit on the screen. Far less than I had expected. But I feel much better having checked and cleaned it anyway. ....
